Video Interview: Social Media As An Agent of Flatness

The Art World March 8, 2010
Edouard Manet The Picnic

Of course all this flattening is quite messy and will remain so for the time being until new business models are tested and implemented. But the general premise that only an art gallery can control the flow of money and access to art is over. Some will continue to operate by the old model by virtue of the depth of their pockets and relationships with collectors. But at some point even the wealthy collectors of contemporary art will discover they can find better art, for less money, without having to go through the galleries, which currently take a heavy fee for their service of connecting.

What the Art World Sees in America?

The Art World March 8, 2010
American Flag Jasper Johns

Yesterday, #Class had yet another panel, this one entitled “Contemporary Art Wake,” in which, for the 1001st time, contemporary artists tried yet again to lay to rest contemporary art. It is comical how often contemporary artists seem to do everything they can to move beyond the current state of art. The production of it, critical reception to it, the institutions that support it and, especially

Artist Janet Bruesselbach

I am doing some blogging from Ed Winkleman Gallery today. It’s pretty quiet now but I did run into a few artists and decided to do a quick interview. First up is Janet Bruesselbach, a Queens-based illustrator and painter. Her work can be found here: http://www.janetbruesselbach.com/. She can also be found on Twitter at @limnrix.

#Class Talk: Social Media As Flattening Agent in the Art World

The Art World March 6, 2010
Social Media Flattening Industries

In less than two weeks I’ll be delivering a talk entitled Social Media and the Art World as part of Bill Powhida and Jen Dalton’s #Class Project. I am just now starting to outline my talk, and I’ve made the decision to document the evolution of my talk here on my blog. In fact, the most recent change that I am happy to announce is that my presentation will be a joint discussion with Mark Venema, who will be participating live, via Skype, from Montreal. Mark is an important member of the art community online and anyone who dips their toes in this pool will recognize his visage.

Round Up of #Class Links Around the Web

The Art World March 1, 2010
Hashtag Class at Ed Winkleman Gallery

Since #Class is starting to get some serious traditional and social press attention, I thought it would be valuable to the community to do a rolling roundup of all the blog posts, reviews and other ephemera associated with the project. Last nights news that Art Forum had selected #Class for its “Critics Picks” should open the doors encouraging new faces and names to become involved with the project. I will update this post as new links are posted and generated. And if you would like to be listed just send me an email at zacharyadamcohen (at) gmail (dot) com.

#Class Gets Underway

#Class Gets Underway

Artists William Powhida and Jen Dalton’s quarantine of Ed Winkleman Gallery for #Class (pronounced Hashtag Class) got off to a rollicking start last night. The gallery looks fantastic, lined with brand-spanking new chalkboards on each wall. The four walls have the words, Hypotheses, Arguments, Assumptions and Conclusions. There is plenty of chalk, and there was plenty of PBR at last nights informal opening, which meant
