There will be a time when we won’t even say the words social media. We won’t need to. Social media will simply be embedded into everyone’s life, every businesses activities. Everyone will automatically think about how their actions feed into their “social stream.” A new business product gets a blog post, or an entire site. Every time we go see a movie, we are checked in, our location is streamed. Every time we buy something, bam, it is out there.
Social media is dying really quickly.
The reason people like social media so much is because it means everything, which is another way of saying it means absolutely nothing. I am tiring of social media. I am tired of the gurus and the blog posts. I am tired of the promises, of the pronouncements. There is just so much bullshit out there. And just like anything else, 9 out of the 10 people involved in social media aren’t really thinking for themselves. They are just regurgitating something snappy they read or heard elsewhere.
That behavior is the exact opposite of what social media means to me.
How the hell am I supposed to deal with this?
I’ve set myself up as a social media strategist, even though my job function is shifting quicker than I know how to handle it. In fact, I do more coaching and business development now. Sure I train people with the tools of social media, something that both my clients and I get a lot of value from.
Instead of continuing to think about a world where social media is everywhere, I am going to agitate for us to begin thinking about a world where social media is nowhere.
Are you ready for that?
