The above headline is an example of social media’s blanketing of our culture. People write things, headlines especially, just to grab your attention. I just implicated myself I think. But the question is worth raising, because at some point it will be true. Just not in the way you might think.
There is no “going back.” We are now a socially aware culture. Of course there are different gradations and levels of social skill sets, from early adopters on down to the resisters, grudgingly asking their friends for help. So social media is never really going to be obsolete, and yet, if our culture continues to embed social tools, thinking, philosophies into our everyday lives, we won’t need the terminology.
The social tools that we have developed, and the hundreds, if not thousands more being developed, will just seem like normal every tools. The same thing happened with cellphones. At first they were shunned. They slowly became ubiquitous, and now we have no idea how we ever lived without them.
Slowly our culture we grow to feel the same way with social media. And then, and only then, will social media be obsolete.
