in Social Media Experimentation

It’s been one of the most stimulating moments for me, these past few months, writing, working, building a new business. I’ve never had an experience quite like this. The closest thing that comes to it is the intellectual rush I remember from college; late nights discussing poetry, art, music. There was a certain freedom then. I am lucky indeed to get another taste of that potent mix of liberation, intensity and excitement.

And what I’ve come to realize is that my thinking about the hospitality business and social media has begun to really coagulate. It’s hardening into the beginnings of a long term thesis. But what good is that? Do I need a long term thesis? Isn’t that what I’ve been railing against so frequently here? Do I really want to become static with my ideas? Do I want them to harden?

No, of course I don’t. But working with a framework, having that 90-second elevator pitch about why social media is so important to the hospitality business, is extremely helpful. It’s something I can return to when I get lost in the weeds. It’s a jumping off point. Like a jazz musician improvising, I can return to the theme, to the melody after I’ve gone all modal. Experimentation is good, as long as you have a home base to come back to.

I felt obligated to respond to this post…:)

To further your analogy, in jazz we think about resolution. Going modal only really sounds “good” if you eventually resolve to the changes. And each song contains only a few chords that are the true home base, while the rest are progressions resolving to that key. Experimentation is good if you always keep in mind where you are going, and never lose track of how you are going to resolve it.

Eric so true. Resolution is what makes all that tension worthwhile. Thanks for picking up on my stream and in fact maybe this is the topic that makes the most sense to expand on for a blog post!!

Thanks for adding your voice here my friend.
