To further your analogy, in jazz we think about resolution. Going modal only really sounds &quot;good&quot; if you eventually resolve to the changes. And each song contains only a few chords that are the true home base, while the rest are progressions resolving to that key. Experimentation is good if you always keep in mind where you are going, and never lose track of how you are going to resolve it.
