Is social media in your DNA?
Were you born to humanize? To socialize? To organize?
Apparently, my protein code was search engine optimized so that keywords like social, human, connection, spiritual, energy, group, collaboration, bravery stuck out against the bots, spiders and crawlers of the Universe. They’ve found me out. I have been indexed.
I am a radical now.
Are you a radical too? When you think of projects, ideas, stories, do you start from a social position? Do you think of the community first? Or yourself?
What Does It Mean to Have Social DNA?
It means that everything you do has an implication for your social media life. Every thought, conversation, meeting, daydream, nightmare, expense et al. feeds into your stream. And that stream, at some point or another gets shared with your community of followers and friends, subscribers and the web. Put it out there, and its out, its no longer yours. You’ve enriched the community.
My role is changing. Now, I spend a good deal of time with clients helping them to realize just how much of what they do has a social media connotation. I used to be wary of gurus who claimed to help people “unleash their creativity.” How infomercialish!
But now I kinda get the appeal. When you are confronted with people who are more creative than they know, or think they’re creativity works in a very specific way, I quickly have to adjust my pitch. It is up to me to reveal how their own creativity has implications beyond what they may see.
From a content and conversation perspective, this is the holy grail. Clients say, “yes but who cares? Who wants to read what I have to say.”
People do care, people do want to hear from you. And embedding social into your DNA allows you to give it to them.

I think it’s important for people who have business DNA to recognize and accept the importance of now integrating and combining social DNA. It seems that in the future having business DNA will not be as effective (if at all) without some measure of social DNA.
